Replacing Capitalism with Nature,
AKA the seasons as economic system!
As I channeled this newsletter, I sat outside on my porch in the chill early-winter wind. It was the perfect balm to infuse me with thoughts of the seasons as supportive system! But first . . .
Moon Moment
Moon: Last quarter, moving towards the new moon
Next full or new moon: New moon on Dec. 13, 6:31pm EST.
Astrological season: Early Sagittarius seaso
Mapping a New Economy
Etymology of “economy": from the Greek “oikos" meaning “house" and “nemein" meaning “manage." To manage house.
Not every moment can be a financial or energetic high.
If it were Summer Solstice every day, we would wear ourselves out. We would overload on flowers and drinking strawberry wine and moving all the time.
If every night were the full moon we'd become exhausted from the intensity of the energy, overburdened by the wideness and the bigness of it all!
We need the winter solstice to balance us, to give us moments for sacred rest. We need time to tune in to this part of the life and death cycle. These months are also abundant: in rest, quiet, darkness, strangeness, time, space.
These things are foundational to life, to the seed in the ground and the seed inside you: it wants to bloom in the spring, but could not without this fallow period to rest, be in the ground, and incubate.
When I say the seasons as economic system, I don't mean a replacement for the system we have; I mean the flow of Enough.
Money is one example of the flow of enough: if we are in right relationship with money, which is super hard in late stage capitalism and shouldn't be an individual burden the way it is, money is an ally. It's allowed to flow in and out. We don't cling to it or toss it away from us. There's trust in energy.
When we look at the seasons, we see the flow of planting, harvest, rest, action. Just different examples of the flow of spending or receiving money.
Money is neutral, not good or bad. It's just a repository for energy. Some folks like saying that money is energy - that's just not my way. For me, money, as with any neutral container, is a repository for energy.
We see ebb and flow in the natural world: the new to full moon cycle; the flow from winter to summer solstice and back again. If you're like me, it's a lot easier to understand and tap into those cycles than the cycles of our actual money system in the US. Unlike our economic system, these natural ones don't intend to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of every moment. Instead, they accept and love the moments of rest and nothingness.
Capitalism, on the other hand, doesn't accept nothingness. It's unacceptable, and so are we if we engage with it! Capitalism is inextricably linked with patriarchy and white supremacy - human constructions that lie to us constantly. And while humans are nature, and influence nature, the earth's cycles carry on without giving a shit about these harmful systems. The moon still cycles, the seasons shift one to the next, outside of what we've made - and what we will, over time, break down.
We get to choose whether we prioritize engaging with a system of urgency and productivity-as-worth, or whether we look to another example outside our windows, and engage with that instead.
The earth wants to support us, and wants the same in return.
This month, I'll focus us on on shifting away from the lies we've been told about value and worth, and towards spending out energy on a sustainable, regenerative, joyful, ancestral, peaceful source. Happy December!
