When we dive into ourselves, we quickly encounter shadows: parts of ourselves we don't like, or don't know well. It is by acquainting ourselves with these shadows that we develop confidence for our whole selves—not just the parts deemed "acceptable."

A Card for Guidance

In one of my favorite Tarot decks, the Nine of Swords is depicted as a sleeping figure, troubled by nightmares of angry monsters and frightening faces. Above them, their spirit reaches open arms towards the nightmares, asking to befriend them. The card reminds us that it is through knowing our fears deeply, loving them, even, that these fears become allies. 

Consider what that would mean for you, for a fear to become an ally. What softness would your day hold that it doesn't now? Would you laugh over a glass of iced tea with this fear? Would you remember when it first formed, and hold it tenderly? 

Shadow Season Spell

Sit in a comfortable, quiet place. 

Take some deep breaths and ground yourself or cast a circle however is in your practice. 

Ask: what is a dark thought that is coming up for you today? One that challenges you, and leads you into hard thoughts about yourself.  

If this thought had a name, and a face, what would it look like? What would you call it? 

Draw your thought-being on a piece of paper and sit with it.

As the light wanes, we're given a time of year when this work comes more naturally to us, as we feel it reflected back to us in the seasons of our mother-home.
