How to do nothing

like a goddamn magic spell

We often fear emptiness. Isn't it wrong to experience such stillness, such nothing? I think it's beautiful, and I'll tell you why, but first:

How to do nothing

Around mid November, my art-making changed. I went from making a lot of art that felt good, to making ONE piece that felt really important for a much longer time, to making doodles. And when the doodles came around, I was surprised to find myself happy: I did enough processing during the fall to know that doodling, drawing on my couch with my cat between my feet just for the pleasure of it, was all the art I needed to make. I didn't even need to save it later, much less put it on the wall: the art was in the making of it.

This continued through my first session of Witch Reborn, where I spent time with my students while they doodled, danced, and vision boarded into deeper understanding of what would be creatively fulfilling. We focused on the process, and I regularly told them, "this creative endeavor has no final draft, that's not what we're doing."

Having a final draft can be a really satisfying, fulfilling experience. But we need to balance that with creating just for the joy of it, without holding on too tight to the final creation.

While winter can mean slowing down creatively, it can also just mean creating differently. If you're not a professional artist with a deadline, how can you create in a way that feels satisfying to you in this moment, regardless of whether it resembles how you created earlier this year?
