A Spell for Gentleness

I'm about to channel a super gentle spell for loving ourselves and leaning into the wildness that is quiet. But first . . .

Moon Moment

Moon: First quarter, heading towards full

Next full or new moon: Full "Cold" Moon on Dec. 26 7:33pm EST

Astrological season: Tail end of Sag/heading into Capricorn season

A Gentleness Spell

I can literally think of no moment when we could not use a spell like this.

Gentleness towards ourselves and towards others is hard to create in a social and economic system that doesn't prize it (and, when it comes to capitalism, that punishes it). So, be gentle with yourself, for not not always being gentle.

I want to be clear, especially in the wake of last month's Bitch Boundaries theme:

Gentleness is not enabling harmful behaviors by refusing to speak up.

Gentleness is not using therapy talk to manipulate the situation in your favor.

Gentleness is not claiming we are so fragile or triggered that we can hear no criticism and accept no accountability.

Gentleness is knowing we are all works in progress. It is releasing cancel culture and embracing transformative justice. And it's also a snuggly cat in a blanket, teaching us all how to purr ourselves into healing.

Ok, enough talk, time for the spell.

The Spell

Imagine you are a wide, ceramic bowl. Color of your choice.

Grab a household bowl to symbolize you.

In the spring, you fill with tiny buds and explorative worms.

In the summer, you fill with flowers, berries, and tomato seeds.

In the fall, you fill with leaves and acorns and decomposing matter.

In the winter, you are allowed to be empty.

Find a comfortable seat with your spine aligned.

Breathe into yourself as bowl.

Notice what's there. Are there exchanges you've started that need to be completed? Are there a few acorns left over from fall?

Now, feel into emptiness. Run your fingers around the inside of your empty household bowl. See what it feels like to notice the nothing. It's scary at first!

But what relief, too: you are not responsible for holding buds, berries, or leaves.

You are allowed to just be.

Feel how light the inside of your household bowl feels. Breathe that lightness into yourself.

Daydream: what becomes possible when you allow your bowl to cyclically empty?
