Email Secrets
The part of my work I like best is the time I spend talking 1-1 with people and helping them solve the problems of their internal worlds. My coach (I have one too! I’ve had several, actually, and will have more, I’m sure) calls this Technician Time, the time you spend actually Doing The Job.
I also like writing these emails. They help me process what’s been coming up, inside me and collectively, and through them I feel connected to a lot of people.
But they have another purpose: starting more conversations with people.
That part hasn’t felt as alive as I want it to. I love to write, and also I like when writing leads to meaningful, supportive conversations. I am going to work on shifting these emails to create more real conversations. (If this makes you nervous, is that because you might be interested in one, but it sounds hard? I get it. It is hard to talk to real people. And also, do it anyway 😈)
I have to pull back the curtain on something not everyone knows, and something that’s a little uncomfortable: I can see who opens my emails.
Like, yep, there’s a list of email addresses for every email I send showing me who opened it. I love this. It makes me feel connected to you to see your names (or emails) there, to know that you read what I write, that you’re thinking critically and feeling alongside me. Some of you have opened every email I’ve sent for the last two months. This tells me that what I do has meaning for you—you wouldn’t show up otherwise. This means a lot to me. Your names are special to me. (Ditto people who only open some of my emails. I see your names too, and I see them across time.)
This is also, frankly, not enough for me anymore. Not that you have to do anything in particular—if you just want to continue to open my emails and peruse them in solitude, please do.
I am, however, going to start including more places to connect inside of my emails. I know I might seem like a stranger, but I also hope you feel like you know me some.
This is what I look like most days. That’s my kitchen.
As I looked through the list of people who consistently read my emails, it really hit home for me: I am talking to you. You will open this today or tomorrow and read these words I’m typing now. We’re having an interaction, and we do most weeks.
And, just like I offer help by sharing thoughts and resources, I can ask for help too. I want the exchange of energy in my work to be reciprocal. It’s one big way to reciprocate for my work that you read what I write. There are other ways I want to ask for your reciprocation too.
Will you answer 3 questions for me?
Thank you, if you answered those questions. You’re helping me in an immediate way: this email has already become more than the usual I send, you read.
I’m gonna keep sending more questions as the weeks go by. You keep answering the ones you want to answer.
Love,
Isabel
